It came from a need to create. Simply, we are two humble teachers who wanted to mould a programme that would marry our love for Theatre and the English Language. We also wanted to help our students discover how they could transform their rich inner lives into results, building ownership over their stories and in turn their education.
That is how The Creative Writing Troupe was conceived!
When you sign up to be a Trouper, you are signing up to be a part of the family. We are a small team and we intend to keep it that way because we want your child to get all of our energy and attention - just like we would our own children. Your child deserves it.
Teacher Zara graduated with an honours degree in NTU's English Literature (2012) and LASALLE's Musical Theatre programme (2020). Her thesis was among the top three in her faculty and was nominated for the Dean's Faculty Award for Best Dissertation. She was awarded the Mendaki Youth Promise Award 2018 (once known as the Goh Chok Tong Youth Promise Award) for being an outstanding local scholar.
As an educator, she started in 2008 as a relief teacher under MOE at her old alma mater, CHIJ St Joseph's Convent, before continuing on to be an enrichment teacher at various tuition centres and schools across the island teaching Creative Writing, English, Literature, and Speech and Drama.
Wanting to cater to all needs, she took further training in pedagogy under the NAC-NIE partnership in Essentials of Teaching and Learning for Specialist Educators and classes under Dyslexia Association of Singapore (DAS) to teach students with learning disabilities. She is MOE approved to teach Programmes for Active Learning (PAL) and enrichment programmes in schools throughout Singapore.
Teacher Canice grew up in a family of educators, which inspired her to take on tutoring and mentoring roles at a young age. This led her to embark on her teaching journey in 2009 with a Speech and Drama centre before going on to educate young learners in more academic subjects. She is certified to teach phonics for reading and writing, and she also teaches contemporary and classical piano for young children.
Teacher Canice is passionate about nurturing all aspects of the mind. She graduated from Singapore Repertory Theatre's The Young Company, and LASALLE College of the Arts with an honours degree in Musical Theatre. Her combined experiences in both education and theatre has allowed her to engage children in fun and meaningful ways.
She believes in providing a safe environment to nurture independent learners through facilitated thinking and experiential learning. She stands by the notion that everyone should not just listen and learn with their two ears, but with their whole body as well.
